They have a power source that directs power through crystals that determine the strength, length, and color of the lightsaber. The best are made from naturally occuring crystals, which have been under pressure for a long time, like how coal turns into diamonds after thousands of years of extreme pressure. They also have a device that simulates thousands of years of pressure to make them quickly, but these aren't considered as legitimate as the naturally occuring ones. Some lightsabers have two or three stones in them so that they can be adjusted in power or length by switching between them. I don't remember the basic materials names, but that is the general idea. Also, one incorrectly put together can kill the maker the first time it is turned on, but a real Jedi must do this, not have his droid press the button while he stands far away heh. These things are talked about in a lot of books, but I think that Shadows of the Empire was the first place I read it because it covers Luke making his second lightsaber that he shows up with in Return of the Jedi to replace the one his father left him. |
